There are going to be companies in attendance from many diverse industries offering a wide range of positions. Browsing every booth and display regardless of their relevance to your search could mean that you don’t make it to the companies who can offer you the perfect fit. This means having a crystal clear picture of exactly what you’re looking for before you attend the job fair. Narrow down your search to just one or two industries by evaluating your traits, skills and experience and envisioning where they might take you professionally.

3 quick tips with resources to help navigate through the job search process if you or someone you know is thinking about looking for a job this summer.

1 Know the laws - youth workers, (especially those under 18), need to understand the federal, state, and local laws that regulate the type of work, number of hours, and work permits required in order to get hired. YouthRules! is an Awesome website loaded with corporate and industry hiring guidelines and application tips for youth workers.

2 Look Here First - if you’re just looking for a job during the summer months then start off by looking into your state and cities summer job programs. These work programs require little to no experience and are fairly easy to get as long as you’re a resident, meet the family income requirement, and submit your application on time. Google your city and/or state’s webpage then search ‘Summer Jobs’ to find an updated list of programs. Don’t wait! Most of these programs have application deadlines and job openings fill up fast. Retail, FoodService & Amusement Parks are still #1!Companies that offer products and services in these industries are always recruiting youth workers. ReadyJob has an (A-Z) list of companies that focus on hiring teens. The list also includes an approximate pay range so have an idea of how much you can earn before you apply.

3 Be Prepared - you probably won’t need a resume to apply for these type of jobs but having one will definitely improve your chances to get hired. CareerKids offers a free resume builder you can use to create a resume with no work experience. The road to get hired doesn’t end after you submit your application so follow up with a phone call or in personal walk-in visit to check on the status of your application. Try not to get caught up in the experience conundrum during interviews. Focus on talking about the things you can offer rather than those you can’t. A positive attitude, quick learning ability, and being a team player is often enough to help you land a job offer.

4 Job Search Tips for the Disabled:

#1 - Make a List … narrow your job search to industries where you are well-qualified and well-suited for the responsibilities. Once have an idea of jobs that would be a great fit for you, target companies known to be disability friendly (link to previous post) and see what’s available.

#2 - Use Online Resources … after applying to disability friendly companies, expand your search with online resources. Use a mix of disability specific job boards (like GettingHired.com or AbilityJobs.com) and general job search sites (like Jobcase).

#3 - Explore Temp to Hire … nothing helps a job seeker more than being able to show that they can do the job. Staffing agencies can be a great way to do just that. Work hard, perform well, and leverage that temporary position into a permanent one once you’ve shown your value. To get started, look into some of America’s largest agencies: Robert Half International, Adecco, Aerotek, or Randstad.

#4 - Use the Ticket to Work Program … if you are an adult age 18 to 64 and you are receiving disability benefits, you are eligible for the Social Security Administration’s Ticket to Work program. They can offer support services, vocational rehabilitation, and help with finding a job. To get started, call their toll free number (1-866-968-7842) or visit the program website.
